Black History Month Celebration

Celebrate Black History Month with African food tasting and demos, dance, drumming, short film screenings, a talk on BC’s Black history with Dr. Handel Wright, a book launch for I Am Still Your Negro by Valerie Mason-John and more!


Presented by the Black History Month organizing committee and the Gibsons Public Library. Sponsored by TD Bank and the Gibsons Public Market.

10:30 am: Meditation/Asanas

12 pm: Opening welcome from Mayor Bill Beamish, followed by traditional Nigerian song and dance.

1-2 pm: African Food Tasting/Demos with Chef Iyabo.

2:30-4 pm: Dr. Handel Kashobe Wright “The History and Geography of Blackness in BC.” Learn about the principal figures and groups and the subsequent erasure of Black history in BC. Followed by lively discussion.



4:30-5 pm: Launch of “I Am Still Your Negro,” the new poetry collection by Valerie Mason-John, with a foreword by George Eliot Clarke.


5-6 pm: “African Happy Hour” More food tastings, demos and conversation!
