Internet Access Policy of the Gibsons & District Public Library:
The Gibsons & District Public Library regards the Internet in the same way as its other information resources in accordance with its mission of serving our patrons’ needs for information, lifelong learning, and leisure pursuits. As with more traditional resources, the Library does not act in place of or in the absence of a parent. The Library is not responsible for enforcing any restrictions which a parent or guardian may place on a minor’s use of this resource. The accuracy of the information obtained from the Internet is the responsibility of the producer/originator, not the Library. The Library cannot guarantee the quality of the information obtained through the Internet.
In addition to the general rules respecting use of the library, the Gibsons & District Public Library prohibits the use of its workstations for any purpose which would contravene any statute or government regulation, or which might create civil liability by the user or the Library to any person. For example, the Criminal Code includes prohibitions against child pornography, obscenity, hate literature, and literature for illicit drug use. An example of civil liability is the law of libel and slander.
No effort has been made to be exhaustive in giving the above examples. Users are reminded that ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Use of Library workstations is conditional on the user’s agreement to observe this policy. By continuing to use the workstation, the user indicates agreement to all requirements of this policy.
Public Internet Access
Use of the public Internet terminals is free for both library members and visitors. You can sign on with your Gibsons & District Public Library, Sechelt Public Library, or BC One library card. Visitors can access the Internet terminals upon request at the reference or circulation desk.
Staff Assistance:
Information staff will assist you upon request, although we may not be familiar with every application you might want to use. You are invited to consult the many books, magazines, and videos about the Internet available at the Library.
Printing:
A printer is available for use. Black and white copies are 25¢ cents per page, colour is 50¢ per page, payable at the Information desk at the end of your time. Downloading is available.
Wireless:
You will need to bring your own laptop computer to the library and it will need to have built-in WiFi or you will need to install a WiFi network card.
The Library does not provide wireless cards.
Most WiFi equipment will be compatible. However, the library can make no guarantees as to compatibility of your equipment with the library’s network.
Everyone’s computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment.
Usage:
Internet computers are to be used for Internet access and word processing only. You may not make any changes to the configuration of the software or hardware.
Since our space is limited and increased noise from group conversations is disruptive to others, a maximum of two people can use a work station at one time.
The Library’s Internet access does not include mail (except for web based mail services like Hot Mail).
All users are expected to respect the privacy of others using the Internet and not interfere with their use.
Important Notice:
Users are reminded that the Internet terminals are in a public area. You are expected to use the Internet Terminals in accordance with the public nature of the location. Library staff members are fully authorized to protect the enjoyment of the Library by the general public, including any children.
Note for Parents:
You, as a parent, are responsible for supervising your child’s access to all library resources, including the Internet. Your child needs your advice and guidance to make the most of the Internet experience.
